Sustainability Governance Structure Merit University

Merit University adopts a centralized–decentralized sustainability governance model, combining strategic leadership, operational management, and faculty-level implementation. This structure ensures that sustainability is embedded across education, research, campus operations, healthcare services, and community engagement.

 

This governance structure below  positions Merit University to become a leading sustainable medical university, ensuring that sustainability is not a standalone function but an integrated institutional priority embedded in decision-making, operations, and culture.

2.1 University Leadership (Strategic Oversight)

Chair: University President
Members: Deans and Vice Deans

Role:

  • Approve sustainability strategy and policies
  • Ensure alignment with Egypt Vision 2030 and SDGs
  • Allocate resources and institutional support
  • Monitor high-level performance

 

2.2 Sustainability Committee (Core Governance Body)

Chair: University President
Members:

  • Sustainability Director / Chief Sustainability Officer
  • Representatives from:
    • Medicine
    • Pharmacy
    • Physical Therapy
    • Biotechnology
  • Director of Facilities & Operations
  • Director of Quality Assurance
  • Student Representative
  • External advisor (optional – industry/NGO)

Role:

  • Develop and oversee sustainability strategy
  • Coordinate implementation across faculties
  • Monitor KPIs and performance
  • Prepare sustainability reports (THE/QS)
  • Ensure integration of sustainability into all university functions

 

2.3 Sustainability Office (Operational Unit)

Head: Sustainability Director / CSO
Team:

  • Environmental Specialist
  • Data & Reporting Analyst
  • Community Engagement Coordinator
  • Training & Awareness Officer

Role:

  • Day-to-day implementation of sustainability initiatives
  • Data collection, monitoring, and reporting
  • Organizing training and awareness programs
  • Supporting research and projects
  • Managing partnerships

 

2.4 Faculty Sustainability Coordinators

Each faculty appoints a Sustainability Coordinator.

Role:

  • Implement sustainability initiatives at faculty level
  • Integrate sustainability into curricula
  • Coordinate research and student activities
  • Report performance to Sustainability Office

 

2.5 Student Sustainability Council / Club

Members: Student representatives from all faculties

Role:

  • Lead student engagement and awareness
  • Organize campaigns and initiatives
  • Support community outreach
  • Promote sustainability culture

 

2.6 Technical & Operations Units

Includes:

  • Facilities Management
  • Energy & Utilities Team
  • IT & Digital Systems
  • Procurement Office

Role:

  • Implement green campus operations
  • Manage energy, water, waste systems
  • Ensure sustainable procurement
  • Support digital sustainability solutions

 

2.7 External Advisory Board (Optional but Recommended)

Members:

  • Industry experts
  • Healthcare sector leaders
  • Environmental specialists
  • International partners (e.g., University of East London)

Role:

  • Provide strategic guidance
  • Support benchmarking and innovation
  • Strengthen international positioning
  • Faculty Coordinators → Sustainability Office → Sustainability Committee → University Leadership
  • Annual Sustainability Report → Public Disclosure
  • Top-down leadership + bottom-up implementation
  • Integration across all university sectors
  • Data-driven monitoring and reporting
  • Strong student engagement
