Merit Story

*The name "Merit" was chosen for the university as it signifies worthiness, entitlement, and excellence.*

*The significance:* Merit refers to "Princess Meritamen," the fourth daughter of King Ramses II from his wife, Queen Nefertari, who became queen after her mother's death.

She was also a priestess of the goddess Hathor, and rituals were regularly performed in her honor. Her name, Meritamen, means "Beloved of Amun."

A statue of the princess is located in the Temple of Ramses II in the city of Akhmim, Sohag Governorate. This signifies the university's historical connection to ancient Egyptian civilization – the distinctive character of Upper Egypt – and the university's connection to its location.
